Costa Rica is a relatively safe country to visit, but just as in any country, you must consider to take precautions in order to safely enjoy your time.
Here are some suggestions:
- Common Sense is the most important rule!
- Be aware of your surroundings, watch your things.
- When in a big city, if you carry a backpack, keep it in front.
- Do not to carry the actual passport. Keep your real passport in the safe.
- Purse slashers and pickpockets are a common problem in down town.
-If you walk alone bring a minimum amount of cash, leave the rest in the safe.

- Northwest of the central market is considered the red district, please avoid.
- Try to stay in Central Avenue if you decide to visit the city after all.
- Walking in the downtown, specially at night is not advisable!
- Avoid wearing jewelry or expensive watches or camera in the city.
- Again! Use your common sense!
A couple more more things! Beware of cars in Costa Rica! Costa Ricans are very unique drivers! In most cases cars have the right to go first.
Do not forget that you closer to the Ecuador! Wear lots of sun block and a hat if possible, and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
If you know motion sickness affects you, it is suggested to take your preferred medicine one hour before you get on the bus.
If you are planing to shop, start comparing prices! Most of the stores have their prices marked and they take credit cards like Visa, Master Card and American Express. Discovery card is not accepted. You will have opportunities to shop during the tour in some of the towns. Street vendors only take cash.
If you find something very special that you really love, it might be a good idea to buy it. You may not find it anywhere else!
If your goal for visiting Costa Rica is not to move from your hotel, and sunbathe all day, an escorted tour is not a good idea for you.
