Cerveceria Costa Rica is the primary brewer of Costa Rican beer. They actually were the first Latin American brewery authorized to produce Heineken.
Imperial: is the Ticos most popular beer. Its origin goes back to 1024. It is definetly suited to a tropical climate. It´s nick name is El Aguila (the Eagle), due to its logo.
Pilsen: is the second in popularity and has been on the market for more than 100 years. It has a more intense flavor and bitterness.Is is also referred as the Blonde beer, due to its color.
Bavaria:it is said that its golden color and fine taste gives it the feel of an European beer. The Gold Bavaria is the traditional and favorite., but there is also a dark and a lite version. Costa Rican women prefer Bavaria!
Rock Ice: it is said to have more full body taste.
Heineken:it has been produced in Costa Rica since 1986.
Kaiser: it is a non alcoholic beer with a high lever or flavor and aroma.
Rum.
Costa Ricans also like to drink rum. The premier Costa Rican rum is Centenario which has a fine edge like cognac and a hint of vanilla but also very popular is the Nicaraguan rum Flor de Caña.
Guaro is the traditional national alcoholic drink on Costa Rica. A clear liquor made of sugar cane. The most popular brand is Cacique. Many find it strong. Red label and black label are most common, both with an image of "Quatro Plumas," the four-feathered Indian Cacique (it means "chief")
Costa Ricans drink their guaro straight or mixed with club soda or Fresca.Guaro also mixes well with other soft drinks , and fruit juices. A very popular mixed drink is the Guaro Sour. When drinking it straight, it's customary to follow a shot with a bite into a fresh lime covered in salt. If you want to experience it safely, try not to drink it straight like tequila: a couple of shots may put you to sleep!
Coffee liquor.
Several brands of coffee liqueurs and coffee creams are also produced in Costa Rica. Cafe Rica is similar to Kahlúa. Cafe Britt produces their own line of coffee liqueurs which are very good.
Coffee.
Costa Rica is famous for producing some of the best coffee in the world.The most famous coffees by region are Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Heredia, and Alajuela. The best Costa Rican coffee beans, which are grown above 3,900 feet, are designated as strictly hard bean. The "good hard bean" classification is given to coffees grown from 3,300 to 3,900 feet. One of the most popular export gourmet quality coffee is Britt. But also there are some other brands that are very good 1820, Montaña, and Oro.
The best places to buy liquor and coffee are most supermarkets and liquor stores. One good opportunity will be at our stop at Liberia, on day 7.
